September 15, 2008: World Movement for Democracy Networks Issue Statements on International Day of Democracy

On this first occasion of International Day of Democracy, Regional networks of the World Movement for Democracy released statements calling on governments and citizens across the globe to adhere to international principles of democracy.

At the 46th plenary meeting held on November 8, 2007, the UN General Assembly declared September 15 as the International Day of Democracy to reaffirm that “democracy is a universal value based on the freely-expressed will of people to determine their own political, economic, social and cultural systems, and their full participation in all aspects of life.”  For more information about the International Day of Democracy, please visit: http://www.un.org/News/Press/docs/2007/ga10655.doc.htm and http://www.un.org/events/democracyday/.
