World Movement Steering Committee Expresses Its Concern over the Deteriorating Situation in Zimbabwe

On December 22, 2008, the Steering Committee of the World Movement for Democracy issued a statement on Zimbabwe, expressing its solidarity with the courageous World Movement participants and other democracy and human rights activists in that country.   The statement– signed on behalf of the Steering Committee by its chair, The Hon. Kim Campbell, former Prime Minister of Canada, and two other members, The Hon. Michael Danby, MP, Australia, and The Hon. Jana Hybaskova, Member of the European Parliament from Czech Republic – calls for the immediate release of recently abducted democracy and human rights activists, including prominent human rights activist Ms. Jestina Mukoko.  The Steering Committee also urges the international community to act to protect Zimbabwean citizens from the severely deteriorating economic, health, and humanitarian situation, a result of the continuing political crisis and lack of response to it.
